This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals—sounds that say listen to this, it is important.

I read this for the first time on the train last night and I can’t stop thinking about it at all.
I mean, I always feel like a freak because I’m never able to move on like this. You know? People just have an affair or even entire relationships. They break up and they forget. They move on like they would have changed brand of cereals. I feel I was never able to forget anyone I’ve been with. Because each person had their own specific qualities. You can never replace anyone. What is lost is lost. Each relationship when it ends, really damages me. I never fully recover. That’s why I’m careful when getting involved, because it hurts too much. I see little details in them, so specific to each of them that move me, and that I miss and will always miss. You can never replace anyone, because everyone is made of such beautiful specific details.
